Music-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire
About the Questionnaire
The Music-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire is a self-administered tool developed in 2017 to assess subjective music perception, musical engagement, and the potential impact of music on quality of life in adult cochlear implant users with the potential to guide and support music rehabilitation. The adaptation of the questionnaire to Turkish and its validity and reliability study were conducted in 2021 by Akbulut et al.
The questionnaire consists of two parts, one assessing musical experiences, and the other assessing the importance of these experiences. The entire survey contains 36 items, 18 in each section. The first part of the questionnaire is divided into two subscales. The ‘Music Perception’ subscale includes 11 items that assess an individual’s music listening abilities, and the ‘Music Activities’ subscale includes 7 items that assess an individual’s attitudes toward music and musical activities, for a total of 18 items. The second part of the questionnaire is also divided into two subscales. The ‘Music Perception’ subscale includes 11 items that assess the importance of music listening abilities in the first part of the questionnaire, and the ‘Music Activities’ subscale includes 7 items that assess the importance of attitudes toward music and musical activities, for a total of 18 items. All items in both sections are measured using a five-point Likert scale. In addition to the five-point Likert scale, there is an item ‘Not Appropriate’.
In order to assess the impact of music on quality of life and to identify personalized rehabilitation needs, the responses given in the two parts of the questionnaire are matched on a matrix.
