American Tinnitus Association Announces Record Tinnitus Research Funding of Over $655,000

The American Tinnitus Association (ATA) has announced that it will provide over $655,000 in total funding to support research aimed at understanding the causes of tinnitus and developing new treatment approaches. Representing the largest single research budget in the association’s 55-year history, the funding will be distributed across five different projects.

The supported projects span a range of research areas, including clarifying the underlying mechanisms of tinnitus, enabling its objective assessment, developing innovative treatment strategies, and uncovering why some individuals experience more severe symptoms.

Changes in the auditory cortex under investigation

Two of the funded projects focus on the neural changes that emerge in the auditory cortex following hearing loss.

Dr. Kameron Clayton of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye and Ear is investigating how the loss of function in certain inhibitory cell populations after cochlear damage may lead to increased neural activity in the auditory cortex, potentially playing an important role in the perception of tinnitus. In earlier work on hyperacusis, the research team had shown that reactivating these cells could temporarily bring sound perception closer to normal. This new project will assess the effect of the same approach on tinnitus for the first time.

Harvard University doctoral student Anna Guo will explore whether the increased neural activity in the auditory cortex can be permanently suppressed using neuroplasticity mechanisms — the brain’s capacity for reorganization. The study is expected to shed light on why current strategies lose their effectiveness over time in some patients.

Somatosensory stimulation may offer a new treatment approach

Dr. Philippe Fournier of Université Laval in Canada will investigate the role of the trigeminal nerve in the management of tinnitus.

The study will evaluate the effect of vibrotactile stimulation applied to the face, jaw and neck on tinnitus symptoms. Conducted particularly in patients with somatosensory tinnitus — whose symptoms can change with movement or touch — the research will compare vibration alone with methods combining vibration and auditory stimulation. The researchers believe the findings could contribute to the development of personalized treatment approaches.

Toward the objective assessment of tinnitus

One of the most significant challenges in diagnosing and monitoring tinnitus is the lack of a standard method for assessing the symptom objectively; current practice relies largely on patients’ self-reports. Dr. William Sedley of Newcastle University aims to address this gap by developing a new EEG-based assessment tool called MICTAP. The research will test whether the tool can reliably determine the type, severity and degree of distress caused by tinnitus.

If successful results are achieved, the method could establish a common assessment standard for both clinical practice and scientific research.

The link between tinnitus and PTSD examined in greater detail

One of the supported studies focuses on the relationship between tinnitus and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The two conditions are known to co-occur frequently — especially in veterans exposed to high-intensity noise or blast sounds — and to follow a more severe course when they appear together. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this relationship are not yet fully understood.

Emilia Kaniewska, a doctoral student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will use magnetic resonance imaging to compare structural brain differences between individuals with tinnitus only, those with tinnitus accompanied by hearing loss, and those diagnosed with both tinnitus and PTSD. The research is expected to help explain why the two conditions together produce a more severe clinical picture.

Findings to be shared at the 2027 congress

The research teams supported by the ATA will present the results of their work at the Tinnitus Research Initiative (TRI) World Congress, to be held on 15–18 September 2027 in Washington, D.C. The meeting will take place in the United States under the ATA’s hosting for the first time in many years.
