Betül Çiçek Çınar, faculty member at the Department of Audiology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Hacettepe University (Ankara), has been appointed Full Professor as of 30 July 2026. Her work ranges from the audiological assessment of people with inner ear malformations and auditory brainstem implants to objective measures in cochlear implant programming and listening effort.
Graduated from the Department of Psychology.
Completed her thesis comparing objective test techniques in cochlear implant users with inner ear anomalies, supervised by Prof. Ahmet Ataş, in the Audiology and Speech Disorders programme. She also worked as a clinical audiologist between 2008 and 2012.
Joined the Department of Audiology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Hacettepe University, as a research assistant.
From June to September 2015 she worked at Massachusetts Eye and Ear (MEEI), Harvard University, on optimising electrophysiological assessment methods for auditory brainstem implant users.
Completed her thesis on the audiological and radiological characteristics of individuals with cochlear hypoplasia, supervised by Prof. Gonca Sennaroğlu.
Became Assistant Professor at the Department of Audiology, Hacettepe University; in 2019 she took on the role of vice head of department.
Received the title of Associate Professor.
From 4 July to 4 August 2022 she worked as a visiting senior audiologist at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, University Hospital Brussels (UZ Brussel).
From 20 October to 14 November 2025 she was a visiting professor at the Centre for Cognitive Science, Faculty of Philosophy, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland, under the university’s Visiting Professors Programme.
Appointed Full Professor as of 30 July 2026.
Audiological and radiological findings in cochlear hypoplasia, incomplete partition and cochlear nerve hypoplasia; auditory performance after cochlear implantation in these groups.
Long-term outcomes in children with complex inner ear malformations, deciding between a cochlear implant and a brainstem implant, simultaneous and bimodal applications.
Objective measures such as eABR, ECAP and ESRT; programming parameters in inner ear malformations, auditory neuropathy and after revision surgery.
Measuring listening effort with pupillometry, working memory, spatial cognition and the effect of hearing loss on spatial orientation skills.
Turkish validity and reliability studies of questionnaires such as HISQUI19, ABEL (Auditory Behavior in Everyday Life) and the Cochlear Implant Use Questionnaire; the Turkish adaptation of the Vestibular Disorders Activities of Daily Living Scale.
A selection of her work published in international peer-reviewed journals:
Çınar is a co-author of four chapters in Inner Ear Malformations (Springer, 2022), on cochlear aplasia, cochlear hypoplasia, stapedotomy and audiological outcomes with cochlear implantation. She also wrote the chapter on the audiological approach to middle ear implant applications in Neurotology Updates (Springer, 2024), as well as Turkish textbook chapters on cochlear implants and implant fitting and on the classification of hearing loss. She is one of the editors of Odyoloji: Klinik Uygulama Protokolleri (Audiology: Clinical Practice Protocols; Hipokrat, 2018).
She worked as a researcher on the university-funded project “Determining the ABR Protocol in Newborns” (2015–2018).
She has supervised 12 master’s and 6 doctoral theses, 13 of which (10 master’s and 3 doctoral) have been completed. Their topics range from spectral-temporal resolution, listening effort, working memory and spatial cognition in cochlear implant users to speech understanding in noise-exposed workers, tinnitus and cognitive skills after benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.
A full list of her publications is available on her ORCID profile.
We warmly congratulate Prof. Betül Çiçek Çınar on this achievement and wish her continued success in her contributions to audiology and to science.
